GENERATOR MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST FOR FLORIDA HOMEOWNERS (PRE-HURRICANE SEASON)
Florida's hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from August through October. The worst time to discover your standby generator has a dead battery, stale fuel, or a faulty transfer switch is when a Category 3 hurricane is 48 hours from Port St. Lucie.
WHEN TO SCHEDULE PRE-SEASON MAINTENANCE
Schedule your annual generator maintenance in **April or May** — before June 1. This gives your technician time to order any parts needed for repairs before peak demand season, when parts availability and technician scheduling become constrained across the Treasure Coast.
ENGINE AND FUEL SYSTEM CHECKS
Change engine oil and oil filter (every 100–200 hours or annually). Inspect and replace spark plugs if fouled or worn. Clean or replace air filter. Check coolant level and condition on liquid-cooled units. Inspect fuel lines for cracks or deterioration. For propane units, check tank level and schedule pre-season fill.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CHECKS
Load test the battery — replace if below 80% capacity. Clean battery terminals and check connections. Test automatic transfer switch operation. Verify generator starts automatically on simulated outage. Check all wiring connections for corrosion or looseness.
PHYSICAL INSPECTION
Clear vegetation within 5 feet of generator enclosure. Check enclosure for pest intrusion (wasps and rodents nest in generator enclosures). Inspect concrete pad for cracking or settling. Check exhaust system for blockages.
PORT ST. LUCIE-SPECIFIC CONSIDERATIONS
Port St. Lucie's subtropical climate creates specific maintenance challenges. High humidity accelerates battery corrosion and electrical connection oxidation. Salt air in coastal areas of Fort Pierce and Jensen Beach accelerates metal corrosion on enclosures and wiring. Scheduling annual maintenance with a local technician familiar with these conditions ensures your generator is prepared for whatever the Atlantic hurricane season brings.
